This week's reading- Matthew 11 & 12

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is comfortable, and my burden is light”

Matthew 11:28-30

Everything with Jesus is an invitation. In the well known passage Matthew 11:28 Jesus invites us to live differently. Instead of carrying the weight of our own burdens, he offers to help carry them and literally give us rest.

A yoke is a wooden frame that is used to join animals together to pull a load. The imagery of a yoke is seen throughout the Bible and has a negative connotation. There was a 'yoke of slavery,' and the 'heavy yoke' of foreign kings. The Pharisees had a yoke of burdensome religious rules for people to follow so they could be right with God. However, Jesus takes the imagery of cruel submission and transforms it into something that brings us freedom. 1 John 5:3 says “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.”

Jesus' yoke of discipleship is easy and the burdens of his covenant are light.

Take a moment to breathe, slow down and be aware of God's presence. Trust that God is with you. In prayer, imagine the yoke of Jesus. Jesus is on one side of this yoke and you willingly place it over your shoulders so you are on the other. Now you are learning from Jesus and he is helping pull your load. Be aware of the rest he is bringing you. Spend some time thanking him for this gift and time together.
