This week's reading- Matthew 13 & 14
““There is no fear in love. But Perfect love drives out fear.”
At the end of Matthew chapter 14 we see the remarkable account of Jesus walking on water. This story appears in three of the gospels, but Peter walking on water to Jesus is only recorded in Matthew. Jesus is praying on a mountainside while the disciples go on ahead of him in a boat. The wind is against the boat and the disciples are struggling to row (from Mark 6). Jesus walks out to them on the water and the disciples think they are seeing a ghost. Peter says “Lord, if it is you...tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus tells him to come. Peter walks on the water towards Jesus, but he sees the wind, becomes afraid and begins to sink. Jesus reaches out his hand and immediately catches Peter.
Here is a perfect illustration of what happens when we choose fear over faith. Peter starts out well. He is full of enthusiasm and asks the Lord if he can join him on the water. This is bold faith! Peter is trusting in Jesus' supernatural power over the laws of creation and has enough faith to get out of the boat and walk towards Jesus. Fear sets in when Peter takes his eyes off of Jesus and looks at what's around him and consequently begins to sink. This is true of us. It's all too easy to take our eyes off the Lord and look at our circumstances. We become afraid and begin to sink. But our strong and compassionate Jesus reaches out his hand and immediately catches us. He is always with us.
Take a moment and think of any areas of your life where fear has taken hold of you. Ask the Lord today to drive out that fear with his perfect love. Know God is worthy of your trust and will make a way for you. He is always with you.
Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:2)
