This week's reading- Matthew 15 & 16

“Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt”

Exodus 16:32

Do you ever suffer from a case of spiritual memory loss? The disciples certainly did. Matthew Chapter 16:5 starts out by telling us that the disciples had not remembered to bring bread with them on their journey. Jesus then speaks to them in a metaphor and warns the disciples about the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

The disciples do not understand what Jesus means and say “It is because we didn't bring any bread.” Jesus asks them why they don't understand? Jesus has just performed two mind boggling miracles feeding thousands of people. Surely the disciples know Jesus could provide food for them and it's not about the forgotten bread! The disciples finally understand that Jesus is not talking about yeast in bread, but the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Although this account is almost comical to read, I can relate. As humans we are prone to forget what God has done for us, even if it has only just happened. Fortunately God knows this and we see many examples in scripture of God telling us to 'REMEMBER.' When God brought Israel out of Egypt with a 'mighty hand and outstretched arm' the people are told to remember they were slaves in Egypt (Deut. 24 & 26). When God parts the river Jordan for the Israelites to cross they build an altar of 12 stones to remember that God is powerful and to always fear the Lord (Joshua 4). When God gave the Israelite's manna to eat in the wilderness for 40 years they are told to place some in a jar so future generations will never forget the provision of the Lord (Exodus 16).

It is important to remember God's faithfulness to us when we are suffering from spiritual amnesia. If discouraged, we can know God is for us. His promises are just as true yesterday as they are today. We can look back and see where God's mighty hand and outstretched arm have delivered us from Egypt into our Promised Land.

God, remind me of what you have done for me.

Remind me of how I have seen your hand work in my life.

Never let me forget your faithfulness to me.

In Jesus name.
