This week's reading- Luke 5-6

What thoughts play on your internal tape? What do you think about throughout the day? Are you quick to jump to conclusions about someone? Do you hold onto unforgiveness because of something that was done to you? In Luke 6, Jesus gives us some instruction for the secret life of every believer. Here's a selection:

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” Luke 6:27

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Luke 6:37

“First take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.” Luke 6:43

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Luke 6:45

We all have areas where we are tempted to judge, hate, condemn, or be a hypocrite. Unlearning our usual habits takes action on our behalf as we yield to the teachings of Jesus. Our internal reactions can seem so programmed that it feels impossible to break them. When there is a repeated pattern of thought (or action) that is contrary to the will of God for us, it can be called a stronghold. Fortunately, we do not have to conquer strongholds on our own.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (ESV)

Ask God to help you become a student of your thoughts. What triggers those thoughts for you? Maybe your disobedience comes when you watch the news, or catch up with a certain family member. Once you have taken your thoughts captive make them obedient to Christ as you discern the will of God in every situation. With God, anything that seems impossible is actually possible.

“Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny”

~Lao Tzu
