This week's reading- John 15-16

Not long before His arrest and execution, Jesus confided to His close friends some things they could expect. One is the coming of the Holy Spirit, which happened not long after His resurrection (see Acts 1 and 2). In explaining the work of the Spirit, Jesus says, “And when he [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.” John 16:8–11 (NLT)

Sometimes we get our role and the Spirit’s confused. As followers of Jesus, we are to be positive witnesses of His truth and love, by how we act and speak. The Spirit’s role is to convict people of their sin, show them truth, and their need for forgiveness, and need for a relationship with the Father. It may be tempting to try to make people “get it”, but at best, all we do is come across as judgmental. By faithfully living in the light of God’s truth, and encouraging others to consider becoming followers, we will be cooperating with His Spirit who is already working to convince them of the reality of their need. By remembering our role, and not straying from it, we will have significant impact.

Our example, coupled with the Spirit’s conviction, is God’s plan to rescue a lost world.
