This week's reading- John 21

As we close out 2021 and look toward 2022, I hope you will set aside some time to think through what you learned about Jesus this year. Has focusing on the four biographies of His earthly life changed you in any way? Have you identified areas that you would like to work on as you try to be imitators of Christ? Ephesians 5:1-2 says, “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” Notice that Paul says that we are to be imitators in everything we do – not just the easy things, but Every. Single. Thing. And we are to live a life of love. So much easier to say than to do.

In the last chapter of John, Jesus appears once again to His disciples. John tells us that this was the third time Jesus appeared to them after His resurrection (see verse 14). He gives them a miraculous haul of fish and tenderly reinstates Peter. John leaves us with this picture of them on the beach, Jesus loving them to the end of His earthly time. His biography seems to end at the same place it began:

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 NIV

Through our reading this year, and especially during this Christmas season, I pray that you have experienced the glory of the One who made His home with us. You are loved.
