Option One

This year’s Bible Reading Plan will encourage you to explore and develop disciplines in your life that will help you grow in your relationship with Jesus. Think of a discipline as a habit that deeply influences your life. Each month will be devoted to a different spiritual discipline or habit. Richard J. Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth defines spiritual disciplines as “…the means of God’s grace for bringing about genuine personality formation characterized through and through by love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and selfcontrol (Galatians 5:22-23).” Spiritual disciplines are not just something that we read about; they are practices that we do or habits that we develop with the end result of being more like Jesus.

We would like to encourage you to read Celebration of Discipline along with doing the Bible reading. You can purchase it on Kindle right now for only $1.99. The book divides the disciplines into three parts: the inward disciplines, the outward disciplines and the corporate disciplines.

Plan to set aside some time every day to read the verse(s) for the day, read a portion of the book and think and pray about what you’ve read. Journaling your thoughts would be a great way to reinforce what you are learning. This guide is set up for your reading to be done Monday – Friday. Use the weekend as a time of reflection or to catch up on days you may have missed. Take time to practice the discipline that you are learning about. Remember, the disciplines are actions that you do.
