Has God ever scattered what you have built for yourself? Have you ever had your carefully orchestrated plans unravel? I sure have. There’s a lot that I can relate to in this story.
The people in this story were looking to make a name for themselves. They were using their talents and abilities to build a city that would make them famous and build up their own reputation. Their primary concern was honoring themselves – not honoring God.
The pull of making myself look good or building my own kingdom can be really strong. Often I value pleasing other people more than I value pleasing God, and that’s when things begin to unravel. God, in His graciousness, scatters what I have begun to build to protect my most important asset – my heart. Not because He’s threatened by my accomplishments, but because He knows how easy it is for my heart to go astray.
When my heart is focused on God and my deepest desire is to please Him, I build something that’s valuable and lasting. God is able to do more than I could ever ask or even imagine – definitely more than I could ever accomplish on my own.
