“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.” Genesis 21:1. God kept His promise and Sarah conceived a son in her old age. Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born! I can only imagine the incredible happiness of that moment when God came through in a big way.

This story paints a dual picture of joy for Abraham and Sarah and incredible pain and sadness for Hagar and Ishmael. Sarah had taken matters into her own hands by asking Hagar to be a surrogate mother. To say that things didn’t work out is an incredible understatement. But even in the midst of all the things that were done wrong, God in His graciousness intervened and promised to take care of Hagar and Ishmael.

I find great hope in this story of a God who never gives up on us even when we go our own way. He is faithful to the end.“But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love.” Psalm 33:18
