These past few weeks in our reading, we've gotten to know Jacob and seen how God has used a variety of circumstances to humble and teach him. Recently I was talking with a friend who has been through a rough few years in a successful battle with chemical addiction. Before getting clean he had a reputation for being untrustworthy. In his battle with addiction he has not only worked to break the drug habit but also deal with the reasons and causes behind it. As a follower of Christ, this has challenged him to be honest before God and choose to trust Him when life gets tough rather than run and escape in the arms of drugs. He is becoming a new man, not immediately, but day by day, choice by choice.
This is what I see in Jacob. We have watched as he has learned to rely on God rather than his ability to deceive and take advantage of others like he did his brother Esau years before. Now God has lead Jacob back to his homeland where he has the choice of trusting God and facing his fear or resorting back to his old ways.
Those of us who are serious about following Jesus can expect God to do the same training in our lives. God accepts us as we are but He isn’t content with us staying that way!
“When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (TLB)
