This story is a showcase for Jesus' compassion, authority and power. The demon-possessed man was ostracized from the community, yet Jesus responded to his need without hesitation. When Jesus spoke and commanded the demons to leave it was with clear authority that the demons recognized immediately. His power over them is evident when they leave the man and he becomes whole and in his right and restored mind.

A question that needs some attention is about the pigs. To be honest, the Bible doesn’t give us an explanation about why the spirits were permitted to enter the pigs and then bolted off the cliff and killed. There are a few things we do know though. First is that God is purposeful and deliberate. Jesus permitted the demons to occupy the pigs and had his reasons. Maybe it was to underscore what happened to the formerly possessed man and the new life he now had. Or possibly the owner of the pigs had taken advantage or humiliated the demon-possessed man and his family and this was a form of punishment.

One thing is for certain: this man’s life was made new through the love and power of Jesus!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

Have a great Thanksgiving.
