I would have loved to been watching when the events unfolded as Jesus reached out to and healed this man who had been disabled for 38 years. Everyone knew about him and his condition and the hopelessness of his situation. Jesus comes up to him and in a very matter of fact manner says, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." John 5:8. This healing wasn’t because the man made big promises or claimed to have strong faith. In fact, we see later the man didn’t even know who Jesus was (vs 13). Wow!
As the events unfold we see Jesus run into the man later on at the Temple. My guess is that the man had come to worship God and thank Him for his healing – even though he still did not know who Jesus was. As we continue reading the passage says, “Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you”.
The man’s physical healing was amazing, but the truth is that he (like all of us will) eventually died. Physical healing is temporary, but what was more important was the healing of the relationship between this man and God. That healing has eternal consequences. As I finish writing this, I have a couple of friends that I am praying will experience God’s power in their lives to overcome some major issues they struggle with. My prayer is that they will recognize God’s intervention and, like the disabled man, decide to follow him, too.
