Temptation is all around us in big and small ways and all temptations have one thing in common – keeping us from full dependence on God. We are surrounded by opportunities to take short-cuts that will make us feel better, ease pressure we feel or escape responsibility. Temptation is something we all face and that is why I love this episode in Joseph’s life when he was presented with temptation on a silver platter. An affair with a high official’s wife had risks, but could also have given him power and protection if he handled it right. But, Joseph had a deeper devotion to His God than to his own pleasure, prestige or future.
In 1 Corinthians 10:13, we have a promise from God regarding our capacity to resist temptation which says, “13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” (NLT)
Joseph didn’t hesitate to say “no” and that was key. The moment we begin to waver and debate about sin is when we set the stage for rationalizing or giving in to feeling helpless. As you read about Joseph this week, think about temptation in your life and how you can begin to resist and trust God to show you a way out.
