“Why doesn’t God make my life easier when I’m trying to obey Him?” If you are like me, this is a question that has crossed your mind a few times, and I bet Moses thought it, too. The truth is, that having a personal relationship with God makes life better, but not necessarily easier. If being close to God equated to an easy life, then Jesus sure missed it! God never intended our lives to be easy, but He does want them to be fulfilling, purposeful and joyous…and easy won’t lead us there.
God is using Moses to lead the Israelites away from Egypt and Pharaoh’s brutal reign. He is also preparing both Moses and the people to come to Him with humble and trusting lives. Easy would never do that. So, God is using difficulty, injustice and suffering to get everyone’s attention, so that when He acts it will be clear to all that He is God and there is no other.
When you and I find ourselves struggling and wondering if God cares, we need to remember one thing. He cares so much for us that He sent His only Son to take on the punishment that we deserved, so we could have our sin forgiven and become His adopted children. As His children, when we suffer we can be confident that He knows, cares and is ready to use it for good – ours and others. Some suffering is self-induced, due to poor choices. Sometimes, it may be God training us to develop stronger “faith” muscles. And other times, our persevering through difficult and painful times is to show God’s ability to us and to others, to sustain us no matter what comes along.
Moses is going to learn this as we read further. His life is a tribute to the value of trusting God, no matter how difficult and perilous things get. You and I can learn from his example and help others see the surpassing value of following God!
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28 (NLT)
