When I was a kid, we had a ton of rules in our home and I remember thinking that as soon as I was on my own, it would be great to not have any more restrictions. In my immature thinking, rules hold us back while total freedom to do whatever we want leads to a full and exciting life. At my parents’ and my own severe cost, I discovered that I was dead wrong. Without rules, life becomes chaos. God gave the Israelites the 10 commandments out of love and a deep desire for them to experience full and free lives by having insight into how to maintain a strong relationship with Him and others.

A key reason that we need rules is because our sinful tendencies, left unchecked, lead us into harm. Here is an example that most of us see every day. The most restrictive highways in our region are often referred to as “Freeways”. These roads have severely limited access and egress, HOV lanes and significant fines for violations. The result is that these “freeways” provide a safe environment for higher posted speeds and significantly reduce delays that are found on other roads.

Whenever God gives us restrictions, it is always for our good. Period. He wants us to experience lives that are full, blessed and free. If you ever doubt that, just look at the cross.
