That’s the length of time given to a team of five basketball players to make a shot. I remember watching the NBA finals a couple years ago and distinctly hearing this from the announcer.
“James dribbles. Drives to the lane and IS BLOCKED! Wade gets the rebound and THEY GET A NEW 24!”
I love the last five words. As followers of Christ, we get a new 24 hours each day. Here’s a typical day for a follower of Jesus: we get up, we follow Jesus, we sin, we feel regret, we repent, and we rebound.
It reminds me of Jeremiah’s words in Lamentations 3:23: Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
As we studied regret this past weekend in our current series, regret should lead us to repentance. Repentance is our opportunity to rebound. Regret is healthy and it’s something that we should feel when we sin. Our sin is serious. We only need to look at the ugliness of the cross and the reality of hell to see how God views our sin. Repentance is something that all of us should be doing every day. It’s turning from trusting ourselves and our wisdom to trusting Jesus and His way.
YOU GET A NEW 24!
