The story this week has the makings of a great movie. God is ready to bring relief to His people who have been oppressed for twenty-three years by a powerful and well-armed enemy. He communicates His plan through Deborah, Israel’s military and spiritual leader at the time. She commissioned one of Israel’s soldiers to fulfill the task but he was unwilling unless she accompanied him. Deborah responded with, “Very well,” she replied, “I will go with you. But you will receive no honor in this venture, for the LORD’s victory over Sisera will be at the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh. Judges 4:9 (NLT)
As we read further we discover that Sisera is killed by an unexpected heroine, Jael. This is a historic account that is brutal and harsh. We may recoil at what Jael did, but her act was during a time of war and served to free many of the horrible treatment they had endured. God’s promise to Deborah of deliverance came to pass and His people learned another lesson.
