We never outgrow the basics – whether it is food, exercise, relationships or our faith. In our first 25 years, New Hope tried to stay focused on the basics of loving God, loving each other and loving our neighbors who don’t yet know Jesus. This week’s Take Home Sheet provides a check-up for us to see how we are doing and gives some ideas on where growth is needed.
Jesus tells us, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."
John 14:21 (NIV)
Obedience is a clear sign that we value God and His desires above our own. Obedience requires knowing God’s will and His ways and this comes from reading and learning the Bible.
How am I doing in showing my devotion to God by obeying Him?
Am I regularly reading and learning the Bible through a consistent reading plan?
Loving others in His church
When we become followers of Jesus, we are part of God’s family. God wants us to love and care for each other, and this is both our privilege and responsibility.
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT)
Am I genuinely connected to others in my church?
Am I active in a Small Group? Ministry Team?
Am I working to heal relationships that have gotten messy?
Loving people who are not followers – yet!
As Jesus’ church, we can never forget that we have been entrusted with the most important mission ever – helping others understand that God loves them and has made a way for them to have a relationship with Him through Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf.
Do I have friends that I am praying to become followers of Jesus?
Have I invited them to my home, church service or an event?
Have I told them how I became a follower?
Do I know how to explain how to become a follower of Jesus?
