“I didn’t think you would listen.”

“I knew you wouldn’t care.”

“You would just get mad at me.”

“I’ve blown it so many times before…why would you pay attention?”

These are the kind of thoughts many of us have when we mess up and think about approaching God. It’s easy to assume that God’s attitude toward us when we blow it, will be like what others have been over the years – like parents, teachers or coaches. The problem is, God is immensely different and that is why we need the Bible to inform our thinking. Psalm 40 gives us a picture of God relating to us in the midst of our sin. David knows that he is guilty of violating God’s righteous standard and after trying to hide it, comes clean saying:

1 I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. 3 He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. 4 Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD… Psalm 40:1-4 (NLT)

In this, we see that God takes our sin seriously and doesn’t ignore it. But, He also loves us and won’t abandon us either. When we humbly and honestly admit to Him our fault, we will find grace, forgiveness and restoration. This gives me huge hope and confidence!
