I’ve been fascinated by a verse in our reading this week – one I have read many times, but this time has really stood out. “When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.” Psalm 138:3 (NIV) The idea being conveyed by King David is that when he prayed with a humble heart, ready to obey whatever God said, he had strength and resolve to trust God and confidently resist temptation. Man, that is powerful! When you and I pray and recognize that we are truly in the presence of God, we can be certain that He is ready to help us as we step out and do what is right in His eyes. I know as a parent, whenever one of my kids asked for my help to do the right thing, I was ready to help them and would stand beside them all the way. That is what David is writing about here.
When we make it our practice to regularly come to God and devote ourselves to do what He wants, and do it His way, we will find our resolve growing and our capacity expanded. Strength and endurance come from trusting and obeying God and remembering that He is with us all along the way. That’s how faith grows. That’s how the life of a follower works.
