Today we are looking at Proverbs 6 with its focus on how we live our daily lives.
There are so many good things from this chapter, but one that really stood out to me as I read this time was the role that parents have in the lives of their children:
20My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. 21 Keep their words always in your heart. Tie them around your neck. 22 When you walk, their counsel will lead you. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up, they will advise you. 23 For their command is a lamp and their instruction a light; their corrective discipline is the way to life.
I was struck by some of the wording that is used as it’s the same that is used about God’s Word and His commands. It was a reminder to me that we were created to be in relationship with God and through that relationship, we are to teach and guide our children. They, in turn, are to keep those words close to their hearts and let them protect and advise.
Whether you are a parent or not, God’s Word is meant to counsel and guide you in the way you live your life. Psalm 119:105 says:
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.
Words are powerful and have such potential for both good and evil. Knowing, studying and meditating on God’s Word gives us direction for our own lives, but can also impact the next generation when it’s shared.
