Years ago, when I was a fairly new follower of Jesus, I was given some wisdom that has stayed with me. I was taught that if I adopt three attitudes, God will work powerfully in, and through, my life. These three attitudes are Faithful, Available and Teachable - FAT. Anyone who approaches God this way will discover His ability to radically transform their life and use them to make a significant impact. Proverbs reinforces this truth,“So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you. 9 Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more.” Proverbs 9:8-9 (NLT)
Here we see that those God calls “wise” are people who are not merely hungry to gain knowledge, but are so devoted to doing their best, that they embrace correction and instruction. I know many people who are willing to learn, however, they draw the line at being corrected by one of their peers. This is where humility comes into play. Those that God considers wise and righteous are willing to learn from being challenged and corrected, even by one of their peers, so that they can become better equipped to honor God in all areas of their life.
To that end, here are a few questions to consider as application of this idea:
When was the last time I changed my mind about something because I became convinced it was true to what the Bible teaches?
When have I been challenged or corrected by a friend regarding a behavior, attitude or action? How did I respond?
When was the last time I asked someone, that I knew would shoot straight with me, to give me honest feedback?
When it comes to wisdom
