In Matthew 2, Joseph is running for his life trying to protect his family. His actions and decisions are guided by messages God sends him through angels. As he follows those directions, he and his family stay safe. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be guided by messages from angels, to feel that confident in my decisions.
Every January I feel the need to examine my life, what I've done, where I'm going, what I want to accomplish; and I want to make good decisions about what goals I want to tackle. It certainly would be nice to have a direct message from God through an angel saying, "This is the way! Take the right path, not the left one." The supernatural world does exist all around us. And angels are fighting to protect God's people. In Psalms 91:11 it says, "For he will order his angelsto protect you wherever you go. " We don't understand exactly what type of protection this is, but we can be confident that God sends us help when we need it.
As we start this new year and we reflect on the past and plans for the future, let's remember that God cares about protecting His faithful followers. That encourages me to set goals focused on my own faithfulness and spiritual growth. Sure I want to lose ten pounds, read more books, and experience new, exciting things. But, the only goal with any real weight to it has to do with strengthening my relationship with God.
